Africa South of the Sahara
Hosted by Stanford University, this searchable directory of web sites catalogued by country and topic is a bookmark must.

Africa Information Centre
A clickable map provides easy access to separate country pages -- each of which lists government web sites, statistics, map resources, academic and news links, and more.

Africa Research Central
Provides information on US and European archives, libraries, and museums with important collections of African primary sources. A must for researchers.

Electronic Development and Environment Information System in the UK - Africa page
Excellent resource that includes links to information sources on the crisis situation in the Great Lakes region of Zaire, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya

Africaserver presents an online directory of Sub-Sahara African organisations and businesses in the Netherlands.

Society of Research on African Cultures
Includes discussion forums, an archive of conference papers, and a good selection of links.

Africa Business Information Services
A useful resource for economic information on the continent, particularly Nigeria.

Global Coalition for Africa
A forum for African development.

Ultimate Guide to North African Anthropology

Africa Policy Information Centre

African Soul site
Provides an interesting introduction to the Maasai of Kenya. The site doubles as a travel guide, and also has features on African music and recipes.

Africa name site
Provides a guide to traditional African names, explaining each name's meaning and pronunciation. The site also offers a database of African proverbs.

Africa Revisited
A tribute to the continent's cultural heritage. The site includes articles on African nomads, Swahili culture, German colonial architecture in Togo and Mission settlements in South Africa.

Contemporary African Music and Arts Archive
Presents an extensive survey of the continent's cultural life.

Africultures
Available in both high-bandwith Flash format and ordinary html. Although the bulk of the content is in French, some articles are available in English, but best of all is the fabulous directory of cultural web sites.

Afrocentric Debate Resource Homepage
Includes a lively debate on Africa's influence on classical civilisation, maps, images, and links aplenty.

African Timelines
A well-linked guide to the continent's oral traditions, literature and film, from ancient times through the slave trade and anti-colonialism to contemporary trends. More than just a brief history, the site offers an excellent springboard to African web resources.

Africa 2000
Keeps track of population control advocacy supremacists and maintains a database of articles on US foreign policy and aid programmes.

IFC African Business Network
Part of the International Finance Corporation, offers a rich vein of information on business in Africa. You'll find guidelines for starting and financing a business, and a mailing list dedicated to business networking.

African Royalty
A site offering the latest news on our kings, queens and their families. There's also a good selection of links for further research.

African Technology Forum
Dedicated to the technological development of the continent, the site provides articles on subjects as diverse as computer literacy and deforestation.

East Africa Sources
Provides a directory for doing business in the region. The online database contains contact details for more than 10,000 organisations and companies in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

Greater Horn Information Exchange
USAID-sponsored collection of resources on Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda

Fourth World Documentation Project
Provides information on nations that are often ignored by the international media. The site includes documents on the Great Lakes Crisis and background material on the Ogoni Nation in Nigeria.

Contemporary conflicts in Africa
Reports cover the DR-Congo war, the Ethiopia-Eritrea conflict, the Guinea Bissau disturbance, and the Angolan civil war. A comprehensive archive includes documents from universities and development agencies dealing with subjects such as conflict resolution and ethnic violence.

MBendi AfroPaedia
SA service intended to promote global business in Africa, but its sites are a valuable guide to politics and economics

Lubombo Spatial Development Initiative
A programme by the governments of Swaziland, Moçambique and South Africa to ensure that new investment occurs rapidly in the area.

Foundation for Democracy in Africa
A non-profit orgnaisation based in the United States. Its web site includes documents relating to development, trade and investment.

Africa Internet Infrastructure Information web site
A country by country guide to ISPs and a report on connectivity in Africa.

SouthScan
A British publication on Southern African affairs, is updated fortnightly.

Southern African Development Community
Provides government profiles, economic and general overviews, internet resources and contact details for all SADC countries.

Available in English and French.

Part of the United Nations.

African Cookbook
Hosted by the African Studies Centre at the University of Pennsylvania, the site has recipes from 10 African countries. Although not a pretty site, it does have a enormous amount of information.

African Music Pages
Listen to Soukous, Zairean dance music, Ghana's Highlife sounds or West Nigeria's Palm Wine music, via RealAudio. You'll also find introductory essays, a list of recommended books and links to related web sites.

Abyssinia Cyberspace Gateway
Hosts individual sites on Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somaliland, and Somalia.

Moja.com
Provides news from Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Available in Swahili and English, the site provides links to news and weather reports, business and travel information and a English-Swahili-English dictionary.
